Google core update

A Google core update is a big, broad change Google makes to its search systems several times a year. Google says core updates don't target specific sites or pages. They reassess results across the whole web, so a page can slip in the results without being bad, because other pages now answer the search better.

What Google core update means for your business

Google announces its big core updates, with start and end dates, on its Search Status Dashboard. If your traffic drops, Google's advice is to wait until the rollout ends, then give it at least a full week before you compare your numbers in Search Console against a week from before the update began. We'd wait for that week too, because a comparison made mid-rollout can point you at the wrong pages.

If a page slips a couple of spots, Google says there's no call for big changes, and to leave pages that already do well alone. A large fall is when it says to look at the whole site with its self-assessment questions about helpful, reliable, people-first content, and to ask people you trust who don't work on the site.

We'd open the Performance report in Search Console, compare the top pages and searches before and after, and start with the ones that lost the most. Then we'd read each page next to what now shows above it. Google warns against quick fixes, like pulling a page element because you heard it hurts SEO, and calls deleting content a last resort. It also says recovery can take months, and that smaller core updates it doesn't announce can lift a site that's improved.

If your traffic fell around a core update and you're not sure what to change, a careful look at your search data and your pages is where we'd start.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited Google's own page alongside a Facebook answers page, an SEO glossary and agency blogs, and gave a one to three week rollout time that Google's page doesn't state. ChatGPT stayed close to Google's page and cited it.
