Helpful Content Update

The helpful content update was a Google Search system, announced in 2022, built to show more original, helpful content written by people, for people, and less content made mainly to pull in search traffic. In March 2024 it became part of Google's core ranking systems, and Google now lists it among its retired systems.

What Helpful Content Update means for your business

People still say a site was "hit by the helpful content update," often shortened to HCU. Since March 2024 there's no separate update to wait out. Google's page on its ranking systems says the job now happens inside its core systems, which weigh many things to pick helpful results.

The questions Google gives site owners still apply. Its guide to people-first content asks whether a page offers original information, reporting, research or analysis. It warns against pages that mainly sum up what others say without adding much, and against putting out lots of content on many topics in the hope some of it ranks.

We'd go page by page and ask one thing: does this tell a buyer something they couldn't get from the other results? Pages that only restate the basics of your trade are the ones we'd look at first. Pages that show how you do the job, and for whom, we'd keep and build on.

If your traffic fell and your blog is mostly general advice anyone could write, rewriting it with what you've seen on real jobs is the citation-ready content work we do.
