Log File Analysis
Log file analysis is reading your web server's access log, the record of every request the server handles, to see who and what asked for which pages. Apache's documentation says each line can hold the visitor's IP address, the time, the page requested, the status code sent back, and the user agent, the name a browser or bot uses.

What Log File Analysis means for your business
Your server log is one of the few places bot visits show up at all. Google Analytics leaves them out: its help page says traffic from known bots and spiders "is automatically excluded," and you can't turn that off. Search Console shows how Google crawls you, but not OpenAI's or Anthropic's crawlers. Your server log records every request that reaches your server, from any bot.
We'd check which bots come and how often, and which pages they ask for. We'd look for important pages they never touch, and for errors, redirect chains or blocked requests in the status codes. Then we'd check that each visit is real, because the user agent is only a name the visitor gives itself. Google explains how to confirm a visit that claims to be Googlebot.
To get started, ask your host or developer for the raw access logs, not a traffic summary. If your site sits behind a CDN, the network that stores copies of your pages closer to visitors, some visits stop there and never reach your server, so check its logs or dashboard too.
If you can't tell whether ChatGPT's or Claude's crawlers ever reach your pages, reading your logs for AI crawler visits is one of the first checks in our AI search work.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview gave the general IT meaning first, then the SEO use, citing SEO tool blogs, log software companies and YouTube. ChatGPT answered only the IT meaning, with security and troubleshooting examples, and cited nothing.
