Passage Ranking
Passage ranking is an AI system Google Search uses to look at single sections, or passages, of a web page, so it can better judge how relevant the whole page is to a search. Google still ranks the page. The passage helps Google see that a long page holds the answer to a narrow question.

What Passage Ranking means for your business
Google announced it in October 2020 and said it would improve 7 percent of searches. The first wording said Google could now index single passages, not just pages, and SEO writers called it passage indexing. Google's guide now lists it as a ranking system, and the US copy of that announcement now calls it a breakthrough in ranking.
You'll also see passage-level optimization, for writing with this in mind, and passage-level retrieval, for search tools that pick out single passages instead of whole pages. Either way, the habit is the same: give each part of a long page a heading a buyer would type, and put the answer in the first lines under it.
We wouldn't split one good page into many thin ones for this. Google built passage ranking so a long page can still win a narrow search. If your best answers sit halfway down long pages under vague headings, rewriting each section so it answers one question on its own is the work we'd do.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview gave Google's meaning and cited SEO agency blogs and glossaries rather than Google's own pages. ChatGPT explained it with an example page about AI in healthcare and cited nothing.
