AI Search Engine

An AI search engine is a search tool that answers your question in plain sentences and shows links to web sources. OpenAI's announcement of ChatGPT search describes the idea: fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, and follow-up questions that keep the whole chat in mind.

What AI Search Engine means for your business

ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google's AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot all fit the label, and each draws on its own sources. OpenAI's post says ChatGPT search uses outside search providers and content from its partners, so we'd expect how your site does in regular search to carry over. It also says any website can choose to appear in it.

For a business, the change is in what the buyer sees. Instead of a page of links to compare, they read one answer, and your name is either in it or it isn't. We'd check two things: whether each tool's crawler can reach your pages, and whether your site and listings say plainly what you do, where, and for whom.

An answer can change from one day to the next, so we'd never judge one from a single run. We'd check the same buyer question on a few different days before deciding anything.

If buyers in your trade ask Perplexity or ChatGPT who to hire and your name never comes up, getting your business named in AI answers is the job we'd take on first.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview didn't define the term. It listed popular AI search tools instead, citing review roundups from software blogs and tech sites. ChatGPT gave a plain definition, named four tools and linked only their homepages.
