BERT (Google Search)

BERT, short for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers, is an AI system Google uses to understand how the words in a search work together to mean something. Google brought it to Search in 2019 and said it helps most with longer, conversational searches where small words like "for" and "to" matter. Google's ranking systems guide still lists it.

What BERT (Google Search) means for your business

Google's launch post gave a plain example. Someone searched about a Brazilian traveler needing a visa for the U.S. Older systems missed what the word "to" was doing and showed results about Americans going to Brazil. With BERT, Google said, Search understood which way the trip went.

In 2019, Google said it was using BERT for both ranking and featured snippets, the short answer boxes at the top of some results. It came out of Google's research on transformers, which Google describes as models that look at each word in relation to all the other words in a sentence.

Google says BERT pays attention to small words like "for" and "to". So we'd make sure a page answers the version of the question the buyer means, like shipping from Canada to the U.S. instead of the other way round, in the same plain words.

If your pages answer the short keyword but not the full question with its small words, rewriting them around how people really search is part of our SEO work.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview and ChatGPT both explained BERT as a general language model and gave its use in Search one line. Google's cited Google Research, Wikipedia and tech glossaries; ChatGPT cited nothing.
