Context Window

A context window is all the text an AI language model can look at while it writes a reply, including the reply itself. Anthropic's documentation calls it the AI's working memory and says it's separate from the huge pile of text the AI was trained on. A bigger window holds more, but Anthropic says more isn't automatically better.

What Context Window means for your business

For a business, the split that matters is between what an AI tool learned in training and what's in front of it right now. When someone pastes your price sheet into Claude, or Claude opens your page because someone asked it to, that text sits in the context window for that conversation. It doesn't change what the tool learned.

Anthropic's docs say accuracy and recall slip as the window fills, which Anthropic calls context rot. They also say choosing what goes into the window matters as much as how much room there is. Chat apps like claude.ai may drop the oldest turns first as a conversation runs long.

We'd take Anthropic's point about choosing what goes in and apply it to your own site. Since more text can mean less accuracy, we'd keep the facts buyers ask about, like prices, hours and service area, short and in one place, rather than spread across long pages that say nearly the same thing.

If AI tools have your current facts in front of them and still get them wrong, making each key page carry your facts in plain words, near the top is where we'd start.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview called it an AI's working memory, listed window sizes for named models, and cited IBM, Wikipedia, Stanford, vendor blogs and YouTube. ChatGPT gave a similar answer with a desk analogy and cited nothing.
