Disavow links
Disavowing links means asking Google to ignore certain links that point to your website, through a tool in Google Search Console. You upload a text file listing the pages or whole domains. Google says most sites never need it. It's meant for sites with lots of spammy or artificial links that have led to a manual action, or likely will.

What Disavow links means for your business
Google's page sets two tests, and you need both. You have a lot of spammy, artificial or low-quality links pointing at you, and they've brought a manual action, or likely will. A manual action is when a person at Google reviews your site and decides it breaks Google's spam policies. Google's first advice is to get those links taken down. The disavow file is for the ones you can't remove, and Google warns that using it wrong can hurt how your site does in search.
Toxic backlinks is a label from SEO tools for links their own scores flag as risky. Google's disavow page doesn't use the phrase. It says Google can usually work out which links to trust on its own. We wouldn't file on a tool's toxic list alone.
We'd open the Manual actions report in Search Console first. If it's clean and nobody has bought links for you, we'd usually leave the tool alone.
If a past SEO did buy links, we'd ask for removals, then disavow what's left. Google says the list can take a few weeks to take effect. If a tool has flagged a long list of your links and you're not sure whether to act, a second look from our SEO team can sort real problems from noise.
