Referring domains
Referring domains are the separate websites that link to your site or page, each counted once no matter how many links it sends. Ahrefs, an SEO software company, puts it this way: two links from the same news site still make one referring domain. SEO tools show the count next to your total number of backlinks.

What Referring domains means for your business
Google's free Search Console shows its own version. Look for Top linking sites in the Links report. It groups links by root domain, so a site's www and mobile versions count as one, and it's a partial list.
Each SEO tool crawls the web its own way, so different SEO tools will give you different counts for the same site. Ahrefs says that's normal. We'd pick one tool and watch the trend, rather than compare one tool's number with another's.
Ahrefs reports that pages linked from more separate sites tend to get more search traffic, and it says itself that this is a correlation, not proof of cause. We'd read the list, not the number. A jump in referring domains that's all directories or sites you've never heard of is worth a closer look, and our link spam entry covers why.
If you have no idea which sites link to you, or a tool's number has you worried, we'll pull the list and tell you which ones matter.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic and SEO blogs, and called referring domains a "major trust signal" for Google with only an SEO blog behind that. ChatGPT gave a worked example and rough number ranges, with no sources.
