Head Term

A head term is a search phrase that lots of people type, at the popular end of all searches. A 2014 search research paper calls these head queries and sets them against tail queries, which each come up rarely but together make up most of the different searches people run.

What Head Term means for your business

SEO writers use head term, or head keyword (also called a short-tail keyword), for the short, broad phrase at the top of a topic, like a trade name on its own. The longer, more specific searches below it are the long tail. The same paper notes why researchers care: a frequent search comes with lots of click history, so a search engine has more to go on.

For a business, the head term is usually the name of what you do. Lots of people type it, and some of them want something else: a job, a how-to, a definition. We'd still want your site to cover it, because it's the plainest way to say what your trade is. We'd expect the buyer who's ready to call to type more words, like a town, a problem or a deadline.

We'd plan a site from both ends: one clear page for the head term, and answers to the specific questions below it.

If your site leans on one broad phrase and misses the questions buyers ask before they call, building answers for those longer searches fills that in.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview took its definition from two marketing companies' glossaries, while much of page one was slang and boating meanings of head. ChatGPT gave the SEO meaning with a table of examples and cited nothing.
