SEO Keywords

SEO keywords are the searches a website wants its pages to be found for, written the way people type them. Google's SEO starter guide says to think about the words a user might search for to find your content. Paid search uses the same word for something else, a setting an advertiser picks.

What SEO Keywords means for your business

That difference trips people up. Google's Ads help describes keywords as words or phrases you choose to help decide when and where your ad can appear. In SEO there's no setting to choose. The words on your page are what Google reads, and Google decides which searches the page fits.

Keywords in a web address do less than you'd guess. Google's starter guide says keywords in a domain name or URL path alone have hardly any effect on ranking beyond showing up in breadcrumbs. We wouldn't buy a new domain or rename pages just to fit a phrase in, and we'd leave working web addresses alone.

A keyword list is really a list of questions. Someone typing a service and a town wants to know who does it near them, when and roughly what it involves. If your keyword report is long but no page answers those questions, turning each phrase into an answer on the right page is where our content work comes in.
