Neural Matching

Neural matching is an AI system Google uses in Search to understand the concepts behind a search and a page and match them to each other, even when the words differ. Google added it in 2018 and says it looks at a whole search or page rather than single keywords, which helps it gather pages that may be relevant.

What Neural Matching means for your business

Google's 2022 post on AI in Search gives each system its own job. RankBrain, from 2015, helps put the top results in order. Neural matching, from 2018, helps find the pages that might fit. BERT, from 2019, reads how the words in a search work together. Google's example for neural matching is the odd search "insights how to manage a green," which it says it matched to management tips based on a color-based personality guide.

In practice, your page can come up for a search that uses different words from yours. That's no reason to write in trade terms, though. We'd put the customer's words on the page next to yours, like "water coming up through the floor" beside "slab leak," so a reader knows right away they're in the right place.

Neural matching is Google's system. Google hasn't said ChatGPT or other AI tools match pages the same way, so we wouldn't plan around it for them.

If your pages are written in trade terms your customers never say, rewriting them in the words buyers bring is a job we'd take on early.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited two agency blogs and a database company, none of Google's own pages. ChatGPT described neural matching as a general AI method used in hiring, health care and shopping, never mentioned Google, and cited nothing.
