Query Understanding
Query understanding is the work a search engine does to figure out what someone means before it picks results. Google describes this step as working out the intent behind a query: fixing spelling, matching synonyms and reading context, such as the language used or whether the search is local, like "pizza" bringing up nearby places that deliver.

What Query Understanding means for your business
Google's guide to its ranking systems names some of the AI systems behind this step, and our neural matching and NLP entries cover them.
For a local business, we'd start with the local part. Google says many searches carry local intent even when nobody types a town. We'd make sure every service page says in plain words what you do and where you do it.
A business name that's also a common word, or a service that means something else in another trade, can be read the wrong way. We'd check what Google and AI tools return for your main searches and whether they read the question the way your buyers mean it.
If searches for what you do bring up pages about something else with the same name, the fix starts with making your pages say plainly what you mean.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited Wikipedia, a search consultant's site, Algolia, YouTube and GitHub, and described it as steps that come before ranking. ChatGPT laid out intent types with examples and cited nothing, so neither answer cited Google.
