Conversational Query

A conversational query is a search typed or spoken the way you'd ask a person, as a full question instead of a few keywords. In 2019, Google said its BERT update helped Search understand longer, more conversational queries, where small words like "for" and "to" change what the person means.

What Conversational Query means for your business

Google's 2019 post also said people often type strings of words they think Search will understand, not what they'd naturally ask, and it called that keyword-ese. Its March 2025 AI Mode announcement went further, inviting complex, multi-part questions and follow-ups.

A full question carries details a keyword doesn't: who it's for, where, by when and what matters most. We'd gather the questions your customers ask on calls, in emails and at the counter, in their own words, and check that your site answers each one in a plain sentence.

Voice search is one kind of conversational query. A question typed into ChatGPT or Google is another, and we'd write one clear answer on your page that serves both.

If buyers ask whole questions and your site only answers in keywords, writing answers that match how people really ask is where our work starts.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited site-search companies' blogs and a LinkedIn article, none from Google, and set keyword search against chat with follow-ups. ChatGPT gave a plain definition with keyword-versus-question examples and cited nothing.
