Prompt-to-Purchase
Prompt-to-purchase is the path from a question someone types into an AI tool to a finished order, sometimes without leaving the chat. Microsoft's January 2026 announcement of Copilot Checkout describes that path: a shopper asks a question, gets guidance, compares options and decides in the same conversation, then buys without being sent to another site.

What Prompt-to-Purchase means for your business
The phrase covers two different paths, and you count them differently. In some AI tools, if the store turns it on, the buyer pays inside the chat. In ChatGPT, Shopify's help pages say shoppers go to the store's own checkout, opened in a browser inside the app. Either way, Shopify says orders from AI channels show up in your admin with the channel or the referring site attached.
That count only catches the orders that came straight through. A buyer who sees your name in an answer and comes back a week later to buy on your site looks like any other visit. So we'd read the AI channel orders next to what new customers tell you about how they found you.
For a service business, the purchase is a booking or a quote request. If you want to know whether an AI tool can take a buyer that far with you, or stalls on the way, testing what AI agents can do with your business is where we'd begin.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited a research paper, a payments study, LinkedIn and YouTube, and described in-chat checkout in ChatGPT for Shopify stores, which Shopify's help pages say now sends buyers to the store's own checkout. ChatGPT cited nothing.
