Server-Side Rendering

Server-side rendering (SSR) is building a web page's HTML on the server each time someone asks for it, so the browser gets a finished page instead of code it has to run first. Google's web.dev guide defines it that way and sets it against client-side rendering (CSR), where JavaScript in the visitor's browser builds the page.

What Server-Side Rendering means for your business

The difference shows up before any script runs. With SSR, the words, links and prices are in the first file the server sends. With CSR, that first file can be close to empty until the browser runs the code. Most popular SSR setups, web.dev says, still run JavaScript after the page arrives to make buttons and forms work, a step it calls hydration. HTML First is a wider idea, a style of building that leans on plain HTML and the browser's own features with fewer layers of tooling, and it tends to land on the same result.

For search, web.dev says SSR is a popular choice because crawlers get a page that looks complete, while CSR can work but often needs extra testing. Our JavaScript SEO entry covers how Google handles pages built in the browser. On speed, web.dev says SSR usually gets content on screen fast and sends less JavaScript, but building each page on request takes server time.

Since web.dev says you can render some pages on the server and leave others to the browser, we'd put the pages buyers land on first in line. A quick test is to turn JavaScript off in your browser and reload, then note what's gone. If your site is built as a JavaScript app and its key pages come up blank without scripts, getting those pages sent as finished HTML is the fix we'd plan.
