AI-Generated Answer
An AI-generated answer is a reply that an AI tool writes in its own words when someone asks a question. In Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode give these answers, with links to web pages that support them. Google says AI Overviews show only when they add something beyond the regular results, so they often don't appear.

What AI-Generated Answer means for your business
ChatGPT gives them too. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT can search the web to answer with current information and links to sources, and it warns that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or wrong. You'll sometimes see the AI answers on a results page called the answer layer.
For a business, what matters is whether your name is in the answer and whether what it says about you is right. A buyer can read the answer, pick a business and never click a link.
Google says pages that show up in AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console's Performance report, mixed in with the rest of your web results. So we'd also look at the answers themselves, asking the same buyer questions many times and noting how often you're named.
If AI answers name your competitors when buyers ask about what you do, getting your business into those answers is the work we do.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview gave a general definition and cited marketing blogs, YouTube Shorts, an Instagram reel and a PR firm's glossary, but no page from Google or OpenAI. ChatGPT gave a general definition with a comparison table and cited nothing.
