Direct Answer
A direct answer is a short, complete reply to a question, placed where readers see it first: at the top of the search results or at the start of a page. Google's guide for its search raters calls a question simple when most people would agree on an answer that fits in one or two sentences or a short list.

What Direct Answer means for your business
Direct answer is an industry phrase. Google doesn't use it as a feature name, and people use it two ways. In search, it means a short answer shown before the links, like a featured snippet or an AI Overview. On a page, it means writing with the answer first. You'll also see that called answer-first formatting, a direct answer format or an above-the-fold answer.
Google has people rate its search results, and those raters work from a guide Google publishes. Google says no single rating moves a page up or down; the ratings help it check and improve its results. The guide tells site owners to put the most helpful content near the top of the page, so visitors can get to it right away.
On a page, we'd make the first sentence under a question answer it and name the thing in full, with no "it" or "this" to start. The detail and the fine print come after, so someone who reads only that sentence still gets the answer. The same guide says most questions aren't the simple kind, so we'd give a short answer only where there is one, like whether you deliver or which towns you serve. For a bigger question, we'd still open with one plain sentence and then give the reader room.
If buyers ask questions your pages answer but the answer sits under a long intro, our answer engine optimization work starts by moving it to the top.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview mixed the everyday meaning, a straight reply, with the search meaning, and cited language reference sites and two SEO blogs. ChatGPT gave only the everyday meaning and cited nothing.
