Grounding

Grounding, in AI, means tying an AI tool's answer to an outside source of facts, such as live search results, so the answer doesn't rest only on what the tool learned in training. Google's Grounding with Google Search, for example, connects its Gemini AI to current web content so it can give more accurate answers and cite sources.

What Grounding means for your business

If you came here about grounding a power outlet or a calming exercise for anxiety, those are different meanings, and this page won't cover them. Here it's the AI sense, which some writers call model grounding.

Google's developer guide shows how this works for apps built on Gemini. When a developer turns on grounding with Google Search, the AI decides whether a search would help, runs one or more searches, and returns an answer with links to the pages it used. In answers like those, a business's page can show up as a source. The guide is for developers, so we wouldn't read it as a description of how AI Overviews pick pages.

Google also gives site owners a choice. Its crawler documentation says a robots.txt rule for Google-Extended controls whether Google can use your content for grounding in Gemini Apps and on Vertex AI, and that the rule doesn't affect your place in Google Search. We'd check what your robots.txt says before anyone changes it, since blocking it may take you out of those answers.

If AI tools look things up in your field and lean on other people's pages for the facts, writing pages that make good sources is how we'd help.
