Parametric Knowledge
Parametric knowledge is what an AI tool learned during training and carries inside itself, with no lookup. Shayne Longpre and colleagues set it against contextual knowledge, the text an AI is handed when it answers. They found the AI systems they tested leaned too hard on what they had memorized, and named that as the cause of made-up answers.

What Parametric Knowledge means for your business
Think of it as the AI's memory. It's fixed at training time, so it can be out of date about your business. When an AI tool answers without looking anything up, memory is all it has. Two related phrases come from the same idea. Parametric belief is what the AI holds to be true from training. Parametric inertia is its habit of sticking with that belief when the text in front of it says something newer, which is the over-reliance the Longpre paper measured.
Nobody outside the AI company can edit that memory, but we can work on what gets written about you. We'd want your business described the same way, in plain words, on your own site and in the other places people write about you, so whatever an AI tool learned or looks up, it finds the same facts. If AI tools describe what you sold years ago instead of what you sell now, writing pages that say plainly what you do today is where we'd start.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview gave the AI meaning and cited AI glossary sites, a GitHub dictionary and one research paper. ChatGPT gave the same meaning with a side-by-side table against outside knowledge and cited nothing.
