Post-hoc Citation
A post-hoc citation is a source an AI tool attaches after it has already written its answer, rather than citing as it writes. A 2025 paper by Yash Saxena and colleagues compares the two ways: citing while writing, and adding or checking citations once the draft is done.

What Post-hoc Citation means for your business
Search the phrase and you'll mostly get statistics and the post hoc fallacy. In AI research it's about when the citing happens. The risk is a link that's correct but wasn't really used. Jonas Wallat and colleagues call this post-rationalization: the answer comes from what the AI already believed, and the cited page just happens to agree. In their 2024 test, up to 57 percent of citations weren't faithful in that way.
We haven't seen ChatGPT or Google say which method they use for a given answer. OpenAI's help page does tell people to open a cited source and check that it supports the answer.
If a tool adds its links after writing, what it already knows about you decides the answer, and the link only has to agree with it. So we'd care about both: being known, and having a page that states your facts so plainly a reader can check them right away. If AI answers link to your site but get your details wrong, writing pages where each fact is plain enough to check is how we'd help.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, neither answer gave the AI meaning. Google's AI Overview mixed academic writing, statistics and a logic fallacy, citing Wikipedia, writing guides and a law dictionary. ChatGPT described adding a reference to an essay after the fact and cited nothing.
