Google AI Mode

Google AI Mode is a part of Google Search where you ask a question in your own words, get an AI-written answer with links to web pages, and keep going with follow-up questions. Google says it splits your question into smaller topics, searches each one at the same time, and pulls the results into one answer.

What Google AI Mode means for your business

AI Overviews are the summaries that sometimes sit on top of regular results. AI Mode is a separate place people open from its button on Google or at google.com/ai. Google's page on AI in Search says the two may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links in each will vary.

Google started AI Mode as a Search Labs experiment in March 2025. It says AI Mode helps most with questions that need more exploring, reasoning or comparing, which sounds a lot like a buyer weighing two or three businesses. Google calls the splitting step query fan-out.

The Search Console setting and page tags that control AI Overviews cover AI Mode too, and the AI Overviews entry walks through them.
