Keyword Cannibalization

Keyword cannibalization is when two or more pages on one website aim at the same search, so they compete with each other instead of one doing the job. Google's John Mueller said in 2020 that there's no penalty for it. Most often, the cost is two weaker pages where one stronger page could rank higher.

What Keyword Cannibalization means for your business

It isn't always worth fixing, either. Mueller said that when the top results are very strong, or your two pages already hold the top spots, combining them may change nothing, so think about what one page would get you before you treat the overlap as a problem.

It can creep in when a site grows a page at a time: a service page, a blog post about the same service, and a location page that says the same things again. To check, open Search Console's Performance report, filter to one search, and look at the Pages tab. If more than one of your pages shows up for it, compare them.

Our fix is a map: each phrase that matters gets one owner page, and other pages that touch the topic link to the owner instead of chasing the same phrase. When two pages already overlap, we merge them and redirect the weaker one, or we rewrite one so it answers a different question.

If several of your pages cover the same service and none of them ranks well, sorting out which page owns which question is part of our citation-ready content work.
