Pillar Page

A pillar page is one page that covers a broad topic from end to end and links to narrower pages on the same site, which link back to it. HubSpot's researchers published the idea in 2017 as the topic cluster model: the pillar is the hub, and each cluster page goes deep on one part.

What Pillar Page means for your business

HubSpot's report says the linking tells search engines the pillar page is an authority on its topic. That's HubSpot's reading, based on experiments it ran in 2016.

For a reader, the pillar is the one page that gives the whole picture before they pick a part to dig into. HubSpot's own check was whether the page would answer every question a person searching the broad phrase had. Its report adds a test: a page built to win one narrow, long-tail search isn't a pillar.

We'd write it for the person who doesn't know yet which question to ask. Each part of the topic gets a short, plain answer under its own heading and a link to the page that goes deeper on that part. If a buyer lands on your site and can't find one page that explains the whole service, writing that page so it answers the big questions first is where we'd start.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview called it the hub of a topic and cited SEO tool and agency blogs and YouTube, but not HubSpot's 2017 report. ChatGPT gave the same hub idea with a digital marketing example and cited nothing.
