Organic Search
Organic search means the free listings in a search engine's results, the ones that show up because they match what someone searched, not because a business paid. Google's Ads glossary defines an organic result as a free listing that appears because it's relevant to someone's search terms, and marks the paid ones as Sponsored.

What Organic Search means for your business
Some people call it natural search; the visits it sends are organic traffic. In Google Analytics, the Organic Search channel counts people who arrive through non-ad links in search results, and Google's help page says that includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Visits that arrive with a referral from ChatGPT, Gemini and similar tools go in a separate channel called AI Assistant.
Clicks from Google's AI answers sit inside organic, while ChatGPT visits that Analytics recognizes land in AI Assistant. We'd look at both channels, and at Search Console's impressions, before deciding what changed.
Paid ads can sit above the free listings, but you can't buy your way into them. Those spots are earned with plain SEO work, which we keep doing.
If fewer people reach you from Google's free results and you're not sure why, finding what now answers your buyers' searches is where we'd begin.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited Google's Ads glossary along with Wikipedia, TechTarget, Similarweb, Semrush and YouTube. ChatGPT set organic against paid results with a made-up restaurant search and cited nothing.
