Title Tag

A title tag is the bit of a web page's code, written as <title>, that names the page. Google uses it as one of several sources for the title link, the clickable headline of a search result. If it's half empty, out of date or wrong for the page, Google may use other text, like the main heading.

What Title Tag means for your business

It's also called the page title or meta title. Give every page one, Google says, and make it describe the page. Skip vague titles like Home. Don't repeat the same words over and over, and don't put the same long phrase on every page. Put your business name at the start or end, set off with a hyphen, colon or pipe. Google sets no maximum for the title itself. It's the headline in results that gets cut short on smaller screens, so the character counts you read about are other people's rules of thumb.

Google also says it can't change a title link by hand for one site. If it shows a different headline from the one you wrote, we'd check the page first: a title with parts missing, an old year, or two headings that look equally important. Google has to crawl the page again to notice a fix, which it says can take a few days to a few weeks.

For a small business, we'd write each title in the words a buyer would use to ask for that page, with your business name at the end. If your pages all share one title, or Google keeps swapping in its own, rewriting titles and headings so each page says what it's for is a fix we'd make early on.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited SEO tool blogs rather than Google's own guide, called the title a direct ranking factor and didn't mention Google rewriting titles. ChatGPT gave a 50 to 60 character range and cited nothing.
