AI Share of Voice
AI share of voice is the percentage of brand mentions in AI answers that go to your business, compared with the competitors in your market. Semrush, which sells a tool that tracks it, also folds the idea into a 0 to 100 AI Visibility score showing how often a brand appears in AI answers next to its competitors.

What AI Share of Voice means for your business
Share of model and share of retrieval are other names for it; one tracking company sells the second as its own metric. Each name asks the same thing: when AI tools talk about businesses like yours, how much of that talk is about you?
Some tools turn it into a score. Evertune's AI Brand Score counts how often AI answers name a brand when the question doesn't, and gives more weight to being named first than being named later. Ahrefs wrote in October 2026 that it weights each answer by how often people search for the question behind it, and that two tools can report different shares for the same brand without either being wrong.
That's why we'd never read the percentage on its own. We'd ask which questions were asked, in which AI tools, against which competitors, and in what month. We'd also keep in mind that your share can rise when a competitor drops out of the answers, with nothing new happening for you.
Your calls, bookings and sales come first in our reports, with the AI numbers beside them. If a dashboard says you're gaining on competitors in AI answers but your bookings haven't moved, why we don't report one AI score comes down to how much the answers swing.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview gave a mentions-based formula and cited HubSpot's glossary, Semrush, tracking tool blogs and YouTube. ChatGPT cited nothing and showed the formula with mention counts for real software brands that it didn't source.
