AI Citation Monitoring

AI citation monitoring is checking, again and again over time, whether AI answers name your business or link to your pages as a source. Ahrefs, whose Brand Radar tool does this, counts a mention when a brand appears in an answer and a citation when one of its pages is shown as a cited source.

What AI Citation Monitoring means for your business

AI mention tracking is the same job under another name, though the two halves differ. A mention is your name in the words of the answer. A citation is your page in the list of sources under it, and a credited link like that is sometimes called an attributed citation. Ahrefs also logs pages an AI tool found while writing an answer but didn't cite, like the extra links ChatGPT keeps under More.

Dark citation is used by tracking vendors in opposite ways, so we'd ask any tool that reports it what it's counting. Some vendors call the asking itself LLM probing. In AI research, LLM probing means something else: looking inside an AI system to see what it has learned.

The first thing we'd check in any monitoring report is the question list. Ahrefs builds its questions from the People Also Ask boxes in Google results. Your buyers may ask in their own words, with their town, their budget or a problem only your trade would know about. Answers shift from one run to the next, so we'd want each question asked many times; our question set entry covers how many.

If you've got a monitoring report and can't tell whether it matters for sales, how we weigh AI numbers against calls and bookings puts the two side by side.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview gave a definition close to a tracking vendor's and cited tracking tool sites, agency blogs, Medium, LinkedIn and YouTube Shorts, but not Google's or Bing's own citation reports. ChatGPT cited nothing and showed a sample report with counts it didn't source.
