Citation Gap

A citation gap is a question your buyers ask where AI answers cite your competitors as sources and leave you out. Similarweb, a web data company, describes a citation gap analysis as measuring how often, where and in what context your brand is cited in AI answers compared with your competitors, across topics, sites and pages.

What Citation Gap means for your business

You'll also see it called a competitive citation gap, a brand coverage gap, a visibility gap or competitive displacement. Each one asks the same thing: on the questions your buyers ask, who gets cited or named, and who's missing?

Once a business is missing across several runs, we'd look at what got cited instead. Sometimes it's a competitor's own page. Sometimes it's a review site, a list article or a forum thread that mentions them and not you.

Those two cases need different fixes. The first calls for a clearer page of your own that answers the question. The second means getting listed and reviewed on the sites buyers already read. Some tools turn this into a to-do list and call each item a citation opportunity. Semrush's AI tracker, for one, lists Source Opportunities: sites AI answers cite that mention your competitors but not you.

If competitors keep turning up in AI answers where you don't, the check we run every month shows how often your name comes up next to theirs.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview gave three meanings, led by the gender citation gap in academic research, with the AI search sense second and cited to one agency post. ChatGPT also mixed academic and SEO meanings and cited no sources.
