Citation Concentration

Citation concentration is how many of the sources AI answers link to come from a small group of websites. In a study posted October 8, 2026, researchers checking 10 AI search tools found each tool's citations bunched up on a small set of sites, and the sites at the top changed from one tool to the next.

What Citation Concentration means for your business

How lopsided it gets depends on the tool. In that study, Reddit was the site Google's AI answers cited most, and YouTube led on Perplexity.

Some tracking tools report the other side of it as a source diversity score, meaning how many different sites the answers draw on. Each tool defines that score its own way, so we wouldn't compare one tool's score with another's.

When you read AI answers to your buyers' questions, write down which sites the sources keep coming back to. Then check whether those sites mention you at all.
