ChatGPT agent mode
ChatGPT agent mode was a ChatGPT setting that used its own virtual browser to do tasks for you on websites, like clicking buttons and filling out forms. OpenAI's help center now says ChatGPT agent is no longer available. It points people to ChatGPT Work for longer tasks and to Work's cloud browser for jobs on websites.

What ChatGPT agent mode means for your business
OpenAI launched agent mode in July 2025. It brought together two earlier tools: Operator, which could click and type on websites, and deep research, which reads many sources and writes a report. On July 9, 2026, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, an agent for longer jobs. Its cloud browser page says Work gets its own browser on a separate computer in the cloud, where it can read pages, click buttons and fill in forms.
OpenAI's examples of cloud browser tasks include checking restaurant availability and asking businesses for quotes. The same page says some websites block automated browsers, and that each site decides whether to let this traffic in. We'd check that a default bot setting at your host or firewall isn't turning those requests away.
Firewall and hosting tools still list this traffic under the old name. OpenAI's allowlisting page says Akamai and HUMAN call it ChatGPT Agent, Cloudflare tags it chatgpt-agent, and Vercel knows it as chatgpt-operator. Each request is signed with Web Bot Auth, which your firewall can check.
If you'd like to know whether ChatGPT could check your availability or ask you for a quote on someone's behalf, testing that from start to finish is part of our agent readiness work.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, ChatGPT described agent mode as a live feature and cited nothing. Google's AI Overview did too, citing OpenAI's 2025 launch post, its help page, course sites and YouTube. Neither said OpenAI had retired it.
