Agentic commerce
Agentic commerce is buying and selling where an AI agent does the shopping for a person, from finding products to paying for them. Stripe's documentation describes it as AI agents making purchases for the people they serve, so a buyer can browse, get recommendations and check out without leaving the chat.

What Agentic commerce means for your business
The connections between an agent and a store are called protocols, shared rules for things like reading a catalog and running a checkout. OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol is one, and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol is another. Amazon builds its own shopping agent into its store instead.
Going by OpenAI's and Stripe's docs, an agent shopping for someone works from the data a store shares: product feeds, prices, stock and checkout details. So we'd check that your shipping rules and return policy are written out on your product pages in plain words, and that your feed matches what the pages say.
In March 2026, OpenAI said the first version of its Instant Checkout wasn't as flexible as it wanted and let stores use their own checkout instead. Before you build anything for agents, we'd test what one can do with your store today: find a product, read the price and get through checkout.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, ChatGPT gave a shopping-agent definition with a made-up laptop example and linked only to company home pages, like OpenAI's and Mastercard's. Google's AI Overview cited IBM, Mastercard, Salesforce and commerce-software blogs, and named two checkout protocols.
