What OpenAI means for your business

Two OpenAI products are where buyers can come across your business. ChatGPT is the AI assistant they talk to. ChatGPT search is the part of ChatGPT that looks things up on the web and links to the pages it used.

OpenAI's crawler page lists four agents. OAI-SearchBot gets pages into ChatGPT's search answers, GPTBot collects pages for training, ChatGPT-User opens a page when someone's question calls for it, and OAI-AdsBot only checks pages submitted as ChatGPT ads. The first three each have an entry here, with what we'd check in your robots.txt file.

If you're trying to see how much of your buyers' AI use runs through OpenAI's products compared with Google's and Microsoft's, our AI search market share and referral traffic report breaks it down by platform.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, ChatGPT called OpenAI a technology company, listed its products and cited only OpenAI's own pages, without the 2025 change to its structure. Google's AI Overview did mention that change, citing OpenAI's About page, Wikipedia, Coursera, Built In and YouTube.
