Dark Social
Dark social is sharing that happens in private, like a link sent by text, email or a messaging app, which website analytics can't trace to its source. Journalist Alexis Madrigal named it in The Atlantic in 2012. He saw that those visits arrive with no referrer, so analytics tools file them as direct traffic, as if someone typed the address.

What Dark Social means for your business
For a local business, dark social is the friend who texts your link to a neighbor, or the group chat where someone asks who does good brake work. It's word of mouth with a link attached. When a shared link carries no campaign tag, Google Analytics files the visit under Direct, which its help page describes as people arriving from a saved link or by typing your address.
So a jump in direct visits right after a post or a mention may be people passing your link along, not people who already knew your address. We'd check the timing before deciding a post did nothing.
Nobody can see inside private chats. Add campaign tags, which Google calls UTM parameters, to the links you share yourself, so a link that gets copied and passed on still carries its label. And ask new customers how they heard about you.
If word of mouth keeps your phone ringing but your posts and profiles don't come up when those same people go looking, getting found in social search is what we work on.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview credited Madrigal and The Atlantic but cited Wikipedia and marketing tool blogs, and put dark social's share of all sharing in a range credited to industry estimates rather than to Madrigal's own data. ChatGPT gave a similar explanation, unsourced.
