Engagement Signal
An engagement signal is a clue from what viewers do with a video or post, like how long they watch it, that a platform uses to decide what to show. YouTube's search help uses the phrase. It says engagement signals, such as how long people watch a video after a given search, help it judge whether the video fits.

What Engagement Signal means for your business
Platforms don't all count engagement the same way. YouTube ties it to the search: people who searched a phrase and kept watching tell it the video answers that phrase. Meta's notes on ranking say that when many people respond well to an Instagram post, or to posts like it, that post moves up in a person's feed.
Comments are on TikTok's list and on Meta's. TikTok names the videos you comment on among what can influence your feeds, and Meta lists what people comment on among the things it looks at on Facebook. Neither says a comment counts for more than a like or a share, so we wouldn't chase comments for their own sake.
Asking for engagement can backfire. Meta lists engagement bait among the low-quality content it shows less of on Facebook. We'd skip posts like "comment YES below", ask the kind of question your buyers really have, and reply to what people say.
If your posts get likes from regulars but never reach new people searching for what you sell, getting those posts in front of searchers is one of the things we work on.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, ChatGPT covered social media, sales and even relationships, then asked which one we meant. Google's AI Overview cited SEO tool blogs and LinkedIn posts, and said thoughtful comments count more than clicks, which the platform pages we read don't say.
