Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free service from Google that helps you watch, maintain and fix how your website shows up in Google Search. It shows which searches bring up your pages, how often people click, which pages Google can find, and which sites link to you. It also flags problems. You don't need it to appear in Google.

What Google Search Console means for your business

We'd set it up on day one for any business with a website. It's where Google gives you its own numbers on which searches showed your pages and how many people clicked through.

The first thing we'd look at is searches that include your business name, which you can filter for in the Performance report. When that number climbs, we read it as more people knowing your name. Some of them may have first heard your name somewhere Search Console can't see, like a ChatGPT answer, and then looked you up on Google.

Since August 31, 2026, Google says every site has a generative AI performance report in Search Console. It counts how often links to your pages showed up in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It counts impressions only, with no clicks, and it can stay hidden until a site has had enough of them.

Search Console only covers Google. If you'd like its numbers read beside your calls, bookings and how often AI answers name you, what we track each quarter shows every number and what it can't tell you.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview took its definition from Google's own help page and cited Google's docs, Wikipedia, a marketing glossary, YouTube and Instagram. ChatGPT gave a similar summary and linked only to Search Console itself.
