Impressions (Search Console)
Impressions in Google Search Console count how often someone saw, or could have seen, a link to your site in Google Search, Discover or News. A link on the results page usually counts even if the person never scrolled down to it. Links inside carousels or sections that expand usually count only once they're scrolled or opened into view.

What Impressions (Search Console) means for your business
Average position sits right beside impressions in the Performance report. Google takes your highest spot on each search where you got an impression, then averages those spots. That's why the report can say 5 when you search and find yourself at 8. Google says your location and search history change what you see. You may also see impression share. That's a Google Ads number, the share of times your ads showed out of the times they could have, and Search Console doesn't report it.
AI answers are counted too. Google says an AI Overview takes up one position, and every link inside it gets that same position. In AI Mode the usual impression rules apply, and a follow-up question counts as a new search. So if impressions jump and clicks don't, showing up as a link in AI answers is one possible reason.
Google's own advice is to aim for impressions from people who'll find your page useful, not just more of them. We'd read impressions as being seen, and then check whether calls and bookings followed.
If your impressions climb but the phone doesn't ring more, how we read Search Console next to your business numbers shows what each number can and can't prove.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview defined impressions from Google's help page and also cited HubSpot, consultant blogs, Quora and a Facebook group. ChatGPT cited nothing and said someone has to see the link; Google also counts links that could have been seen.
