Keyword Ranking

A keyword ranking is the spot where your page shows up in Google's results for a given search, counting down from the top. Google says it ranks results using the words in the search, how relevant and usable the pages are, the expertise of the sources, and the searcher's location and settings, so two people can see different orders.

What Keyword Ranking means for your business

Rank tracking means checking those spots over time. A rank tool runs your phrases from a location you set and reports one number for each. Search Console gives Google's own version, average position, built only from searches where your link got an impression.

Google gives its own example: someone searching "football" in Chicago sees American football, and the same search in London turns up soccer. Local searches work the same way, so a rank checked from your office can be a long way from what a customer across town sees.

We'd read a ranking as a clue about what's working. A page can climb and bring no new calls, and buyers who ask ChatGPT for a recommendation never see Google's results page at all.

If your rank report looks great but the phone's no busier, we'd rather show you the calls and bookings than a list of positions.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited agency blogs and rank-tracking tool pages, with no Google page among them. ChatGPT cited nothing, and neither answer mentioned that Google's order can differ from one searcher to the next.
