SERP Volatility
SERP volatility is how much Google's search results shuffle from one day to the next. SERP stands for search engine results page. Tools such as MozCast track a fixed set of searches every day and compare page one with the day before, so a busy day across many searches can point to a Google change rather than your site.

What SERP Volatility means for your business
People also use the phrase for swings in their own site's rankings. A drop on one day doesn't tell you much by itself. Moz says MozCast helps answer one question: "Did Google change, or was it just me?" If a tracker shows a rough day across many searches, and Google's list of ranking updates shows one rolling out, the cause is probably bigger than your site.
These trackers watch their own fixed sets of searches, not yours. MozCast's set covers 20 industries and five big US cities, so a local search in a small town can move on a calm day, or sit still on a stormy one.
We'd use a tracker as background. The answer comes from your own Search Console. Does the drop hit many pages or a few? Do the dates line up with the tracker's rough days? We'd check both before changing anything.
If your rankings keep jumping and you're not sure it matters, our quarterly report reads your numbers over months, not days.
