Entity ID
An entity ID is the code a knowledge base uses to label one person, place, business or thing. In search, it means the ID that Google's Knowledge Graph, Google's database of facts, keeps for each item. Google's Knowledge Graph Search API returns one with each result, such as kg:/m/0dl567 for Taylor Swift, beside the name and a short description.

What Entity ID means for your business
Looking for the number a state gives a registered business, or the Unique Entity ID on SAM.gov for federal grants and contracts? That's a different meaning, and SAM.gov or your state's business office is the place for it. This page is about search.
Wikidata, the free database run by the Wikimedia Foundation, records Google's IDs for many of its items. Newer ones start with /g/. Older ones start with /m/ and come from Freebase, an earlier database Google shut down. Wikidata gives its own items a Q number, like Q17012245.
We look up a business's ID by searching its name in Google's Knowledge Graph Search API, which returns the ID with the name and description Google holds. If you have a knowledge panel, Wikidata's notes give a way without code: the panel's share link opens a web address with kgmid= in it, and the ID follows. Two IDs for one business, or one that points at a company with a similar name, would suggest Google has your facts split in two or mixed up with someone else's.
If the ID Google keeps for your name brings up someone else's details, we can help with separating your facts from theirs.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview read the term as a business registration number, citing state, federal grant, bank and tax pages, plus one sign-on glossary. ChatGPT gave a general database meaning, cited nothing, and asked which system we meant.
