Ephemeral Content

Ephemeral content is a post made to disappear after a short time, most often a Story that's gone a day after it goes up. Snapchat, which has called ephemerality core to its design, says most Stories are set to delete after 24 hours unless you change the settings, save one to your Public Profile, or someone saves it in Chat.

What Ephemeral Content means for your business

A Story about this week's special reaches people who already follow you. Once it expires, it won't be there when someone searches for that special next month, in the app or on Google.

Snapchat gives Stories a few ways to last longer or travel further. You can save one to your Public Profile. Its privacy page also says a public My Story may be featured in other parts of the app, like Discover, and that Stories sent to Snap Map are public and can be shown on the map and off Snapchat. Instagram works the same way: Meta says Stories disappear after 24 hours unless you add them to your profile as Highlights or save them to your archive.

We'd use Stories for things that should expire: today's hours, a sold-out notice, a quick look behind the counter. Highlights are a fair home for things that change by season, like summer hours. Anything a buyer might look for later, like what you sell, how to book or where you are, belongs in a post, a video or a page that stays up.

If your most useful answers live in Stories that are gone by tomorrow, moving them where buyers can find them later is a quick win we'd look for.

How AI answers it today

On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview and ChatGPT both defined it as content that disappears, usually after 24 hours. Google cited marketing blogs and said no record is kept once time runs out, though Snapchat's own page lists ways a Story is kept.
