Service-Area Business
A service-area business is a business that visits or delivers to customers where they are and doesn't serve them at its own address. Google asks these businesses to remove their address from their Business Profile and list the places they serve instead, up to 20 cities, postal codes or other areas.

What Service-Area Business means for your business
If customers also come to you, like a repair shop that also does house calls, Google calls that a hybrid business. You can show your address and your service areas together.
Google says your whole area shouldn't run more than about two hours' drive from where you're based. We'd list only the places you really work. A service area also doesn't put you in every result inside it, since Google names distance as one of the main things its local results are based on.
Your website should tell the same story. We'd name the areas you serve in plain words on your site and keep them matching your profile, so a person or an AI tool reading either one gets the same answer.
If AI answers say you don't serve a town you drive to every week, making where you work plain everywhere you're listed is what we'd do.

How AI answers it today
On October 29, 2026, Google's AI Overview cited Google's help page alongside field service software blogs and Yelp. ChatGPT cited nothing. Neither answer mentioned Google's limit of 20 service areas or its guidance to stay within about two hours' drive.
